I f you are reading this piece wondering
if someone finally came up with the magic pill that cures writer's block,
unfortunately, you've reached the wrong page. I may as well take a brief
moment to also mention the absence of any toll free numbers, "text-to" codes
or android applications. However, what we can offer you in terms of getting
over those sudden mental humps, are a few things to consider that can help
you get a better idea of its causes. That with a few simple strategies can
help get your train of thought back on the proverbial track.
Writer's Block, by our definition,
is the sudden involuntary blockage in a person's creative flow. Though it is
mostly looked upon as a psychiatric condition associated with the mental
facet of the creative process, there are also certain physical and spiritual
implications that involve one's very consciousness. For many artists and
musicians, writer's block can lead to anything from frustration and
depression to stress and desperation. Writer's block, being discussed here
as it pertains to music, is not limited to just music and can affect any
aspect of idea creation.
In any condition of the mind, body and/or spirit, the
solution is usually a few disciplines behind an accurate diagnosis of
the symptoms.
In the case of
writers' block, it is vital that one first understand the symptoms that
affect our creative ability. Furthermore, one has to be open to an
honest investigation of one's total makeup and not just the ability itself
that is being affected. These symptoms can be as unique to the
individual as the expressions they affect. Taking a long, honest look at
these symptoms can help properly identify the areas to be addressed and give
insight to a solution. With a solid strategy in place, an artist can not
only expand their creative capacity, but unlock new creative potential.
Purpose:
There is a huge difference
in a talented person and an artist. There are many who understand things
based on intellect or exposure and others who understand based on their
lives being specifically designed for a thing. In other words, there are
lots of people who like music and have a knack for making sound. But then
there are those who have discovered a truth that has caused them to become
the essence of what music is. Everyone who likes music or the concept of
music are not necessarily "purposed in" music. Or, one may be purposed in a
certain facet of music but due to lack of knowledge or direction, is
operating in another ability.
If a person is unaware of
their true purpose in life, then they will have difficulty defining the many
abilities they have and what parts they play in that purpose. ANY ability
that lacks purpose will be limited or either "become" a limiter to one's
creative flow.
Purpose
determines the definition, timing and duration of a person's creative
abilities.
Many eventually
discover that their writer's block was not really a block at all, but more
of a creative "shift." You see, your purpose, the manager of your life
and ability, never changes. But your abilities do, weather they increase,
decrease, change in nature or become obsolete for a season. Those not
understanding purpose can miss these "shifts" and find themselves lost,
trying to move forward with a creative flow that is either used up, evolving
or suspended by a more relevant season of their purpose. So weather
you're a person just discovering your musical interests/abilities, or the
seasoned professional considering that next project and the ideas seem
hidden, purpose is a good place to start in your self examination.
Strategy: Purpose will
help you to determine your "measure of rule" and you will know whether to
add to your own ability or seek ass istance
from one who is "purposed in" that ability. Just because you are a great
musician does not mean that you must do all you own choreography. There are
many artists who have gone back to school, purchased equipment and employed
new technology (which, by the way can be very costly) only to find that
their idea got lost somewhere in the tweaks. If you feel you fall in the
category of those who have been taken out of your element by brainstorming
ideas outside of your true path, begin opening your mind
to assuming your rightful place
in the unfolding of your creativity... even if it is not the "lead." True
artistry concerns itself more with the success of its creation than the
credits. Even if your self sufficiency is mainly due to a lack of immediate
financial resources, it is better to pause the project than to present it in
a lesser quality.
|
Experience:
Music is all about life. From emotions we feel, to our dreams and
aspirations. Music is a platform upon which some of life's most deepest
thoughts are expressed. Those thoughts come from experiences and is our next
topic of discussion.

If a person is limited in their own
personal experiences and life perspective, it will have a major impact
on what they can express creatively.
Writer's block can occur when an artist's idea exceeds his/her life
experience. There comes a time when an artist can become "stuck" due to an
idea that is trying to draw them beyond a certain personal comfort zone or
level of thought. If an artist is not ready to embrace new perspective and
allow themselves to become a conduit of this thought through experience,
then it will be difficult to flow creatively in that area. Now I realize
that when I mention the term "experience," it means many things for
different people. So I'll take the liberty of inserting my disclaimer here that my reference to "experience" does not involve the experience of
premarital sex, drugs, alcohol, violence or material indulgence as a
"qualifier" for those seeking to write a song about it.
Simply put, if you have an idea that requires you to see new cultures, begin
to open yourself up to travel. The same goes for new genres and new
technology. When you feel that your current creative flow is insufficient
for a direction you are sure you are destined to go, you will want to
consider if you have opened yourself to fully embracing the life experience
of those expressions.
Strategy: Take a
look around you. What new place have you explored lately? (even if it's just
a new route home from work.) What new material have you picked up to read?
What new instrument or music application have you picked up? What new
cultures or musical styles have you exposed yourself to? New experiences
bring forth new ideas and new ideas feed your creativity. You cannot look to
take your abilities to the next level of creativity when you are seeing the
same things and following the same life routines everyday. Embrace those new
experiences and
then express what they have given you.
Creative Freedom:
How many of you can truly say that you possess creative freedom?
Creative
freedom is a place you come to when you have become fully open to the
vastness that exists within your purpose.
It is a
place in your consciousness where you have found an unlimited reservoir of
ability through embracing your fullest potential. Even though you may work
for a company that seems to have little relevance to your creative path, it
does not mean that you cannot be creatively free. However, based on an
individual's purpose, it may be impossible to contain some artists' in just
a company/employee environment.
When an artist is in a situation where they cannot be creatively free,
writer's block will almost always occur. What hinders creative freedom? For
many, being in a "structured" environment such as a company that limits
one's creative input. "Company" could refer to anything from
advertising to record labels to book publishing, and so on. When the
obligations of a structured environment forces your dream to become just
something you do on the side, then your creative freedom has been infringed
and eventually, you will find yourself with two lives that hate each
other. This inner clash can cause more stress and anxiety through which a
person's creative flow can be hindered.
Strategy: One of the best
ways to attain creative freedom is to attain personal life freedom. This
would include but is not limited to freedom from fear, freedom from
acceptance and freedom from limited thinking. If you work for a company as
described above, you will have various obligations and deadlines which are
all part of the job/project and that's ok. However, if you feel that your
dream is being compromised, then you have to exercise your personal freedom
to "decide" for the greater.

You've got to hear this!... a
phrase I have heard all too often about this type of music that transcends
the normal boundaries of the human consciousness... a sound whose evolution
is always one step ahead of our ability to compare or categorize among
styles and genres past and present. I heard someone call it jazz. I heard
another say that it was more of a "new age" style of music. But no matter how
many arguments presented on the matter, everyone can agree on one thing.
This music gets into you.
Undrai Fizer has always had a very unique relationship with music. If you
were to ask anyone who knows him, they would tell you how miraculously his
abilities came to fruition at a very young age. Now before you begin writing
that last comment off as a loosely used cliché', I had the opportunity to
attend a live venue with Undrai in Lompoc, CA. a few years ago. An older
lady comes up and requests Undrai to play her favorite jazz tune but he did
not know it. Even after the lady hums a little of the chorus, Undrai kindly
admits that he never heard the song before but would make an attempt for his
new fan. The sweet older woman hums the chorus portion of the song while
Undrai runs his fingers through the scale. -And as though he received some
mysterious
download from I-tunes, he not only begins playing the song, but he played
the bridge and the changes... as though he always knew it! So when I say
that the guy is beyond genius, I still fall short of the magnitude of this
guy's musical ability.
Our cover story brings us
to the present day evolution of Dr. Fizer's musical endeavors,... AWAKENING
Music. What is it? It's a form of music that is composed out of a freedom of
spirit that causes people to awaken to a deeper level of consciousness.
There are no subliminal or sonic devices. It has nothing to do with hypnosis
or anything "spooky." Believe me, it's allot easier for people to receive
than articulate. One thing is for sure. It's like the music finds itself in
people.
I had the opportunity to
speak with Dr. Undrai Fizer; founder of the
Kairos Institute of
Personal Discovery and presenter of an
amazing musical concept that he fondly calls "Spirit Music." We spent some
time with Dr. Fizer in NuVibe Studios where he provided us with an in-depth
look into the Awakening Power of Music.
"Sound and
Music were always here. It is simply waiting for those of us willing to
tap into it, to evolve into it."
Sound Trends:
When most
people think of music, there is usually some emotional connection involved.
Whether it be music that causes certain moods, music that helps us to
remember things or music that conveys a certain message. But rarely do we
hear of music that it played with the intent of speaking to ones'
consciousness. Tell our readers about your exploration into this form of
musical expression.
Dr. Fizer:
Music and
sound is as old as God is. Therefore, it has always been here. It already
contained all the power and potential that it always has. So though it may
be new to us who are hearing it for the first time, it was there from the
beginning. It was us who had to tap into it. But people have to be willing
to open themselves up to that level of thought. When I play, I look to
communicate to the soul of a person. Then I merely incorporate my inner love
of that flow and the result is a connection to a deeper experience in life.
Sound Trends:
No artist bio is complete
without a list of other artists who inspired them over the years as they
realized their musical identities. However, I believe many will agree with
me that there are not allot of artists before you who have attempted or
mastered this style of music. How would you say that your music was
inspired?
Dr. Fizer:
There are several artists
that I like. John Tesh and Philip Sayce are a couple. However, music, being
older than us, always spoke to me. It caused me to be free and it was the
freedom that inspired me. We were brought up in this Gospel era of "doing
our thing." There were so many different motives to our music. For many,
there was this attraction to legitimacy that forced our creativity and we
became limited. However, I was always looking to move beyond those barriers
of inadequacy and fear. It was not the "church" per se, but the concepts of
religion that caused us to remain within the confines of the familiar. Once
I began to be free in my ability and no longer limited in my mind and
thought towards what I was hearing within me, the flow was unlocked and I
could tap into the depths of that ability.

Dr. Fizer has also done several personal "affirmation" CD's for those who
request. The music speaks specifically to one's spirit whether it be to
encourage, to empower or to awaken. It's like a personal life signature
articulated in the sound. Think of your favorite composer writing a song
specifically for you. Now imagine that the composer is God.
|
"The music healed me when I
wasn't looking."
Sound Trends:
Different styles and genres of music over the years
have their own "following" per se. Who would you say your audience is?
Dr. Fizer:
Deep thinkers of all
cultures,... all religious thought and those with deep and unique
imagination,... those who take pleasure in concentration. Though there are
many jazz lovers who like it, some are of an acquired taste because of its more
dark or somber flow.
Sound Trends:
Among the many who have
heard your music, which by the way is nothing short of awesome, there are
people who will tend to associate it with Gospel due to its God-inspired
attributes. However the sound and flow can cause some to associate it with
relaxation CD's similar to that of what you may find in your local music
store. However, it's more than obvious that there is a striking difference
in its sound and effect. Would you agree with the general perception
or would you describe it another way?
Dr. Fizer:
Though the "business" of
music requires a genre association, I would prefer that the people perceive
it. If I were to describe it, I would describe it as New Thought,
Meditation-al. I would be ok with New Age or New Wave. I am really not
afraid of these genre's but others may be. I will say that I would not
associate it with the "Christian" genres due to the limited perception by
the mainstream. My music is not anti-Christian by any means but it is far too
big to be fit into a limited perception of the Gospel or inspirational
genre. New World music,... New Age,... that's better.
Sound Trends:
Most live performances are
with artists who rehearse songs that their audience know. Due to the more
personal and spontaneous nature of your music, do you find it challenging
when doing live venues where people may not know what to expect?
Dr. Fizer:
If I am invited to do a
live venue, it is because the organizer is familiar with my style of play. I
would say that about 60% of those who know me, remember a more "church"
style of play. Then there are those who go to my site and are familiar more
with my style of play as it pertains to what I teach. So I will
usually respond based on the venue itself. Though I prefer to flow in the
style that is more along the lines of what I teach about, I have taken
requests for other venues as well.
Sound Trends:
Based on the information
on your website, the AWAKENING music series is only part of a larger
endeavor. Where do you see your music going to as your endeavors evolve?
Dr. Fizer:
I'll always play. However,
the idea of where the music will go globally will be a matter of
marketability. The awakening series is not something that I see as
marketable. Right now, the people who find it are those who look for it. But
to market it to people who are not familiar with it or have a desire for it
would be challenging for a company trying to "sell" it. A company would have
to be very creative in promoting it. They would have to have an
understanding of it that would allow them to introduce it in the right way.
Sound Trends:
A large percentage of
Sound Trends readers are newer, younger artists/musicians, either in age or
in new found passion for musical expression. In today's music industry,
there is allot of pressures that obligate young artists to meet the
standards of the general public and of various record labels. What advice
would you give to them to help them maintain their level of focus and
destined musical path?
Dr. Fizer:
They have to find out if
they are a true artist. The industry does not cause people to find their
artistry. The industry provides no assistance when it comes to what the
artist may want people to feel when they perform. As young artists, they
need to know if they are really free. Some will find out that they are not
really artists at all but rather attracted to fame or acceptance. It is
important that young artist know their artistry and it will be less likely
that they succumb to the pressures that exist in the industry.

You're a young band starting out. After years of
hard work and practices that kept your dedicated crew up until the wee hours
of the morning, you have finally recorded your first demo. All the extra
hours you worked, all the side jobs and even that small bank loan to pay for
the studio time has finally positioned your band for greatness. You're ready
to begin your quest for fame. It is about the same time in which allot of
small mistakes are possible that can cost you everything you've worked hard
for. Are you protected?
It's hard enough to protect anything of
value these days. Criminals have found ways to get just about anything they
want that isn't protected by some high priced protection agency or service.
-And the music industry is no exception. You can have all the talent in the
free world but if you're not careful, you will profit very little from it.
So we took a moment to shed some light on a few common mistakes artists make
and ways to help you determine if your work is vulnerable to what I like to
call Track-Jackers.
Copy Rights
Anyone with any knowledge of product or media
protection knows that the first thing you want to do is obtain copy rights
to any music you do. There is a process by which a person can seal their
work in a mailing package and mail it to themselves. There is another
process by which one purchases a safe deposit box at their bank so that the
work has a documented date of deposit. These methods are good when you just
can't afford to get all 20 of those tracks protected at once. Many artists who first
start out, will use these methods until a later date when they can get the
official copy rights. Another great resource for protecting music is
companies like BMI
and
ASCAP. They not only help you protect your works, but
they manage performance royalties over a number of different scenarios.
Click on either of those words in the sentence and visit their sites. You
can also go to the NuVibe Productions Resource Page for links and further
information.
Promotional Scams
Even with certain copy rights in place, you can
still become vulnerable to Track Jackers. One of the most common mistakes
young artists make is during the time they are trying to score record deals.
Criminals know that you are willing to do what it takes to succeed and if
they can gain your trust, they can make you hand them everything you worked
so hard to build.

Recently, I assisted a client in preparing
a short compilation CD that he would turn over to a radio station for entry
into a contest. I completed the CD and was to deliver it to him the next
day. The compilation was to be uploaded to the stations website for judging
and the winner would get a record deal. Sounds good right? Well, I got a
call the next day from my client who stated that he could not send the
original compilation because after further reading the contest rules, he
discovered that the contest required ORIGINAL tracks in order to qualify.
After further investigation, it turned out that the contest was simply a way to get new material. You see, unless you have a fully recorded or copy
right protected song you could send in the limited amount of time you were
given, then you would more than likely send them an unprotected copy. The
contest would still award the record deal to some fortunate artist, but then
they also have all these free tracks to use as they see fit. Here are some
keys to remember...
1. ANYTIME you choose to participate in a contest or talent show or even if you are
invited to perform at a live venue, you should never perform or submit your
tracks unless they are fully protected. Many opportunities will look
legitimate because they are promoting the event through a familiar source
such as a radio station or charity organization.
2. Read all the rules thoroughly and contact a professional to answer any
questions before you submit your tracks to anyone. Once you sign the dotted
line, there will be nothing more you can do to save that work.
3. Beware of any contest that require original material. Quick deadlines
are also another red flag. If you do not have time to get your works
compiled and properly protected, it is best that you pass on that
opportunity.
Social Networking
and Personal Band Pages
The emergence of social networking has taken the Worldwide Web by storm.
People of all kinds and agendas use these cool sites as a means of promoting
everything from business to dating and yes, music. In May of 2010, a 1 year
study showed that an average of 144.1 million people watched 14.6 billion
videos on YouTube alone! So if I don't yet have a contract deal where the
record label is promoting me, I can promote myself independently. And the
best part is that most of these sites are FREE! However, there is this one
mistake we see people make time and time again. First of all, many of these
sites, in order to make them more feature rich, will allow you to upload
music and/or videos to your page. I have gone to several of my friend's
sites and listened to t heir
entire album for free. So I call them up and show them programs that can
record directly off the site. I had one friend of mine show me his web page
and I was very impressed with the graphics. The company who did the page did
a great job. There was a full bio of the group and an area where you could
purchase downloads of the songs. But in that area, they listed all the songs
on the album and uploaded the full high quality tracks for people to listen
to so that they could get an idea of what the album sounded like and
possibly buy it. But what he did not realize is that with the songs being in
that good of quality, it would be nothing for a Track Jacker to record right
off the website and burn it to a CD. On top of that, if you are paying a
developer to make updates to your website, you've not only lost your works,
but you've lost money correcting the issue. Here are some additional tips...
1. Check your local office supply or electronics store for a music
editing program. Music editing programs are very inexpensive and will allow
you to make clips of your original tracks so that you can give listeners a
sample without giving them the opportunity to record the entire album.
2. If you are going to sell your music through a site that allows
listeners to download individual tracks, select a company that has the
necessary encryptions to give you more control over how your music is
distributed.
3. One tip I like to use is called "audio mark." It's the same concept as
the watermark on a 20 dollar bill. You may be able to copy it, but you can't
resell it. You simply take your audio editing program and speak over the
tracks. Use information like where they can go to purchase or how they can
get to your web page. It still sounds great but deters criminals from trying
to make a profit.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are those of you who may read this already
convinced that there is no possible way to prevent all types of Track
Jacking, because you may have had someone offer to sell you a "bootleg" copy
of some movie or CD and you thought that if it can happen to the big names,
it can happen to me. -And it is true. Technology does have it's
holes. -And even with laws in place, you can't catch everyone who burned
that extra copy and gave it to a friend. But many of the big names have
insurances that cover certain losses that keep them from feeling the brunt
of these crimes. Most newly venturing artists do not. So it is crucial that you properly guard yourself
against as many of these traps as possible. It can save you and/or your band significant
losses.

It's the summer of 1988, a 16
year old kid heads toward a local music store with big dreams of being a
musician. He's had a piano since his 9th birthday but during a church
service the previous Sunday, he had heard a sound that he had never heard
before,... one that would drive him into an entirely new path of musical
interest... the synthesizer.
He had only been to a few
music stores up to that point. Most of which were in shopping malls where
much of the floor space was given graciously to pianos and organs. Usually,
there were only a handful of electronic keyboards on hand and only few of
those were pro-scale. He had heard about Evans from his band teacher at
school and decided he'd venture out on city transit to check it out.
Bells jingle like
Christmas as the eager teen enters the store. "Hi! Welcome to Evans!,"
someone yells. The place is buzzing with people and the sound of various
instruments come from all directions. The smell of vintage furniture and
fresh packaging hits his nostrils as he makes his way to the front counter.
Above him, an extensive, autographed collage of singers, musicians and bands
hang neatly on the wall like that of some musical honor society. "Uhmm can
you show me the keyboards?"
"Sure, just walk to your left and Steve should be
back there to help you in a moment."
Soon the anxious teen was
surrounded by the most beautiful array of musical instruments he had ever
seen and he wanted to play each and every one of them. "Welcome to Evan's.
How may I help you?"
"Uhmm just browsing," the kid replied.
He had just sat down in front of
a Kawai K1 synth that at the time retailed for,... well let's say more than
a 16 year old could imagine at the time.
"I notice that you keep
coming back to this K1. It's a pretty good board..." Steve began to explain
the specifications to the youngster and even though the boy understood very
little of what Steve was saying, he was impressed with the amount of
attention Steve gave him knowing that this kid's allowance probably wouldn't
cover the box that the board was shipped in. But it was never really a
concern.

After about two or so
hours, the boy removes the headphones from his well satisfied ears and
reluctantly proceeds to the exit. Steve yells out, "Thanks for coming, come
back and see us again." The boy waves and says thank you, and it is
obvious that his life had changed. And though disappointed that he could not
take possession of his dream synth, Steve and the crew saw his passion. -and
they would allow that kid to return as much as he liked to spend time with
his dream. It would take him 3 more years to finally make his purchase.
During that time he received several additional product demos, answered
questions and humorous conversations... and a few failed lay-a-way attempts.
But he had finally added that piece of reality to a dream in which they all
shared a mutual hope.
Today, that aspiring
musician has grown up to become a well accomplished musician, producer and
writer. Allot has changed since that day in 1988, but one thing remains the
same. When you walk into Evans Music City, it's like coming home from a long
trip. Everything is just as you remember it, and all you want to do is kick
back and relax with familiar faces who were always there, waiting to hear
about the great experiences that they contributed so much to over the years.

Thanks Evans,
Your friend Johnny McMahon, founder of NuVibe
Productions. |
It's no surprise that Evans
has outlasted many of its competitors over the years. The story of the
aspiring musician is just one of many stories that exist in Evans' 64 year
history. What's their secret? According to GM Steve Locke, there are 3 keys
to Evans' success.
"Among all the celebrities who
have come into the store, I would say that my most memorable experience
was meeting Stevie Wonder."
-Steve
1. Relationships - Evans works closely with local
school districts, churches and music based businesses. In other words, they
are well into the community. And let's not forget about the many bands and
celebrities that come through from time to time. From Sports personalities
like Houston Texans' Mario Williams, former Oiler/Titan Eddie George to
music Legend Stevie Wonder and country great Reba McEntire. And before all
the social networking sites emerged, they have been posting photos and links
of local bands and musical groups for promotion on their website.
2. "We're a REAL music store." - Evans does sales,
repair, rental and education all under one roof. So not only will they
install a complete system, they can also teach you how to use it, then
maintenance it if it breaks down. If you need to leave your current piece of
equipment with them for repair but can't afford to miss that gig tonight,
you just walk over to rentals and they'll get you playing in no time.
Anything music, you can find at Evans.
3. Professional staff - Not only are the staff
professional, they are tenured. The average tenure for Evans employees is
currently is 7 to 10 years. Steve himself has been there for 31 years. With
dedicated employees loving what they do, customers know they can trust in
Evans' ability to meet their musical needs.

With many companies expanding through extensive online and mail order
services, getting new gear has become as easy as calling out for a pizza.
Social networking and internet has made it possible to meet other musicians
and artists from the comfort of their laptop computers. The days of setting
aside that Saturday afternoon to visit your favorite music store hangout...
possibly meeting someone famous or being noticed by someone who could
help your career, have declined dramatically. You have to have some pretty
deep roots to survive as a "brick and mortar" business these days but Evans'
resiliency speaks for itself. They have sponsored and facilitated many
in-store events from product showcases and workshops, to live performances
by some of the most well known musicians in the business. You can't get that
on MySpace.
You can train a person to be a
good customer service associate, but you can't train friendship.
When I think of the past
several years being a customer of Evans, the term "customer service" does
not do them any justice. Now, there is nothing wrong with good customer
service. But customer service is trained. Being a good person is something
you are born with and it shows in everything you do. It is the difference
between
making a good purchase and making a good friend. And if you ask the many
faithful customers who still value the traditions of those Saturday
afternoon jam sessions, they will tell you that friendship beats convenience
hands down. It's that kind of genuine atmosphere that makes Evans more than
your typical music store. All I can say is... DON'T CHANGE.
So to Steve, Mac, Mike, Marco,
Rusty and all my other friends at Evans, please accept this gesture of our
appreciation. Thank you for all you have done for the city of Houston and
for musicians around the world.

Nu Look, Nu Direction
Nu- Look

Productions enters its 9th year in 2011 with an all new list of
production offerings and features. In addition to the standard
production services provided, Artists will have more promotional ability
from within the site. With just a few clicks, they can quickly link
performances and interviews to various social networking sites along
with itineraries and other usefull information. Also, for 2011, NuVibe
Studios expands wi th
both "Booth Style" and live recording capabilities which will give
artists the ability to not only record in the studio environment, but
they can also set up the recording of live venues as well in both audio
and video. Add to that, a full range of resources for packaging and
distribution, Nuvibe Productions can produce entire projects all under
one roof.

NuVibe
productions now offers creative consultation for those needing
assistance with defining their musical career path. Both new and
"seasoned" artists can get assistance with various aspects of their
musical endeavors helping them make the best informed decisions based on
their individual purpose.
Nuvibe Productions has
partnered with various educators who specialize in everything from vocal
skills to the playing of various instruments. If you're looking to take
your project to the next level, let us refer you to one of our preferred
resources.
Nuvibe has published
it's first online e-zine for 2011. It contains information from just
about any musical perspective. Get the latest information on new musical
gear, find helpful tips on musical production and hear from the
professionals on a variety of topics that can help you in your musical
pursuits.
Nu Direction
"When
I originally set up NuVibe Productions, it was just to better enhance
some things I was doing for my ministry team. When I began to get
requests from other artists to assist them with projects, the
business
aspect of NuVibe grew. However, as much fun as I was having
exploring my musical and technological capabilities, I found out how easy it was to
become defined by it. And like with so many companies, the purpose
got lost in the business. In 2009, I took a long hard look at what NuVibe was intended to be and after conferring with my mentors and
making the necessary personal decisions, I chose to take a new approach
that focused more on education and information. We still offer the same
production services and a few newer features, but what remains most
important to me is that artists discover their true a rtistry
and allow it to be defined by their truest and greatest self. Not by
circumstance, the industry, vanity or any other limited way of thinking.
-And when I finally became free from feeling as though I had to use
technology as some sort of camouflage that helped me to "smuggle"
God's insight to people, it was then that I could be free to be more
than a producer. NuVibe will remain NuVibe, but I no longer need
it like that. And that's what I believe has opened new doors for myself
and for the company. I look forward to what happens next."
NuVibe has an aggressive line up of projects for the year including newly
signed recording artist Max Gilreath, Christ 1st Band, Kennetta Burse a.k.a.
"Nore" and many others. Also look for new music from Urbanflow Music,
Heavenly Reign Productions and 1nce Blind. You can check them out on NuVibe
Productions' Band Page. You can also see many artists in the Sound Trends
Spring edition posting here on April 1, 2011. There will be interviews,
video coverage and purpose inspiring dialogue that you will not want to
miss.
Stay tuned...

New Product test Drive
A look at what's new in
2011
It
seems like every year, there is some new advancement in music technology
that everyone just has to have. Whether it be the styling or some incredibly
new feature said to take musician's ability to the next level, huge
tradeshows (like NAMM) are held so that
product manufacturers can get their chance to show off their latest
innovations. However, with al that can be said about these products, how
does a musician add just the right instruments or applications to their
set-up without getting caught up in all the hype? Not to say that many of
these products can or can't live up to their claims. However, it's just as
bad to any musician if the product works perfectly,... just outside of
his/her expectations. So our approach to this topic will not be one to
"sell" you on any particular product. These guys pay hefty sums to marketing
agencies that get the job done for them quite well thank you. But yet, with
all the consumer and competitive research done to keep pace with the ever
evolving music industry, there are those who still find themselves lost in a
maze of highly creative features and no real direction to what will work for
them. So we took a look at a few new products in hopes to shed some light on
what we like to call "purpose based" shopping. Yeah we know,... not the
typical 2011 preview. But then, you're not the typical musician.
Pro Tools frees itself of
its Ball and Chain

Fans of Pro Tools will love what's taking place in 2011. The popular
recording software has been known for its marriage to exclusive hardware and
became the ultimate in interface solutions for recording studios worldwide.
However, being purchased by AVID, Pro Tools underwent a huge list of
upgrades. If you want to get all the details on what these upgrades are,
click on the picture to the right. What peaked our interest in the new
version 9 was that it now no longer requires the use of specific interface
equipment. According to a trusted source, AVID did tweak the compatibility
for its own interfaces and other ASIO compatibles. However, Version 9 can be
used solely by itself giving the user great flexibility. Being able to
purchase the software without the required hardware does put consumers at a
lower price point than some of its previous (full release) versions meaning
that of course musicians on a budget would be able to get into V9 allot more
comfortably. And because of the fact that you have more flexibility of
interface, you can integrate it more easily into your current setup for a
much smoother transition from your current software. So for this, I think
AVID has just given Pro Tools a turn in the right direction.
But wait,... there's MORE!

Just when you thought you
had done all you could do with that track you created, here's a program that
shows you have only scratched the surface. Music Maker just has a way of
taking just about any audio track, cleaning, enhancing and then remixing it
which was what we liked about it. For what it does it is surprisingly
inexpensive and just downright fun. I have used many of the Magix products
over the years including Audio Cleaning Lab and even its Video Editor. The
results are nothing short of awesome. Version 16 is it's latest release
which adds a robust set of new features that yell, "But Wait! there's more!"
Click on the picture to get the list in it's entirety. What we wanted to
highlight about this cool application is that it not only gives you a
powerful music arranger, thousands of high quality sounds, effects and audio
editing options, but it now comes with PC tune-up Software. This is perfect
when you run into that oh so annoying issue of system strain when you're
playing or recording tracks. The PC tools included with Music Maker 16 will
optimize your pc for better audio processing with less "glitching."
Purpose Based Shopping
I have used many different
programs and if you're like me,... booked pretty regularly with clients, you
will want to use caution when taking on any new software. For one, the
learning curve. these days, if you skip a few upgrades because you're
satisfied with your current version of a program, chances are, when you do
decide to upgrade, you'll see things you never saw before that you'll have
to master before you can continue. This can really hold you up if you're
transitioning during a project. Even though the concepts of operation may be
the same, sometimes your computer's operating system, memory or
compatibility with files made by the older version can be a big issue.
Installing any new program may affect how your computer operates with
other software or devices on your system or may make system changes that
make some files unusable. Always do your research before buying. Make back
ups of your files and make sure that you are familiar with the necessary
recovery processes for your machine. Due to the high rate of piracy and
other crimes, many retailers will not issue refunds once you have opened the
package. So again, be sure to do all the necessary research before you buy.
The purpose based shopper will ask him/herself if moving in this direction
technologically will keep him/her on their path. There are so many things
that a musician can get caught up in that takes them completely out of their
element. You may be a very good producer and skilled with mastering audio,
but you may not be as skillful when it comes to Windows Seven compatibility
settings. When adding a new piece of equipment/application to your setup that
suddenly requires you to drop what you are doing to learn it or troubleshoot
it, it is easy to want to begin wearing that hat for experience sake.
However, it is easy to lose track of your project at these times and that
can be costly.
It's no surprise
that as consumers we can get impulsive and in the same way we jump at the
latest automobiles or clothing, we can get drawn into new gear. Is it that
we just want to say we have a Phantom (Roland that is) or do we really know
that that purchase will take our musical capabilities to the next level? The
Purpose Based shopper looks at the new features, then determines if he/she
has mastered his/her current set-up to a point that requires that upgrade. You
see, there are allot of musicians with rooms full of toys that all do the
same thing while none of them get them any closer to their success. A
product of any kind be it musical or otherwise, are only as great as their
return on investment.
The next NAMM music
product showcase will be held in Anaheim, CA January 13-16, 2011. You can
register at www.namm.org. Sound Trends
will follow all the latest product information and post some of our findings
in our Spring issue posting April 1, 2011. It will include news and reviews
but most importantly, things to consider when adding new gear to your
set-up. For more information on resources that will help you become a
Purpose Based shopper, go to

We Did This!
We have come to the
start
of a new journey. Our focus is clear and our goals are sure. Allot of
long hours and hard work has gone into this endeavor as we realize that
no great accomplishment comes without it. We have seen our share of
challenges, hurdles and tests. But the purpose of a far greater measure
has made this ride FUN to no end, which is why we're taking it again and
again. Isn't that how life should be?
I figure that someday,
there may be a lifetime achievement award issued with our name on it and
I guess when that day comes, we'll be honored. But having you here
today, reading and evolving and becoming all that you were created to be
has well eclipsed any gratification that could exist. And with that, we
say thank you for your continued support and investment of time and
resources.
Sound Trends is simply
another creative venture birth from minds that seek to go beyond the
limits of shallow perspective and societal opinion. It is not something
that I could have seen doing 10 years ago. But as I opened my mind to
the freedom of creative possibility, it began to unlock its secrets.
Sound Trends is not only a result of that discovery, but a platform from
which those secrets can be shared with all who are willing to listen to
and embrace them.
NuVibe Productions and
Sound Trends E-zine are not merely "gospel" or "Christian" oriented,
because titles have a tendency to create limited perception. We seek to
flow in the reality of who God is and bring people to a level of thought
relevant to their lives as He designed. The power of music is not in the
genre or in the style. So we don't have the typical boundaries that
would limit us to a particular genre. Though there are some who have
their own preferences, people relate to the life of what they hear and
as in all things, we have to respect that power and use it for the
advancement of its original purpose. The result will be new ideas, new
genre's and new technologies that the world has never seen, but can
relate to through the divine nature that exists is us all.
It is our deepest
desire to inform and inspire. We partner with others who assist us in
creating the possibilities that allow people to realize their truest and
greatest potential. We welcome global support and are committed to
bringing you insight that works.
Thanks to you, we've
gotten the start we had expected, one that will position us for even
greater things in the future and it goes without saying that you are
very much appreciated. But we will say it anyway.
It would not be proper
to go into the next phase without stopping to acknowledge those who
played such a huge role in this endeavor and who continue to dedicate
their efforts to its success. We realize that many of
you never asked for it verbally, but your heart-felt contributions
practically command it.
At the end of the day, it's never been
about me,..
We did this!

From the Editor

I would like to say thanks to all those who made this first issue a
huge success. To my wife Anissa who supported and encouraged me, my daughter
Ariel (future graphic designer) for sharing her photo-shop tips, my daughter
Alexis for making sure I'm not up too late and helping me keep balance with
work and family, to my son Jeremy for making sure Daddy's studio is kept
neat and my equipment is in working order before and after sessions.
I would like to thank Dr. Undrai (front cover)
and Bridget Fizer for their many years of mentorship and friendship. I will
forever be in dept to them for my personal success as well as the
success of these endeavors. It was only fitting that you be the first cover
story of an e-zine that was birth from the creativity that you inspired me
to seize.
I would like to thank Evans Music City for
their participation and the relationship that we have had over the years. I
will never forget those times and I wish you guys well as you continue in
what you do.
I would like to say thanks to Jason Smith for the many
collaborative roles he has played in support of NuVibe Productions such as
the investment of equipment and much of the useful information that we bring
to our readers.
To all my Kairos family locally and around the country who
have seen or heard me behind the camera at some point, letting me know when
the servers were slow (LOL). I appreciate the way you all kept me at the
height of my game, always looking for ways to perfect the broadcasts.
To the NuVibe family, all those artists that have at
some point in their career showed the confidence in us to allow us to become
part of their success whether it be in music or in life. I look forward to
the many things we will create together this year.
To all our readers who not only read what we
have to say, but share with others as they are inspired through the
information and opportunities presented through this site and its endeavors.
I pray not only your success but your wholeness as individuals realizing the
true purpose of your lives.
To all our sponsors, vendors, preferred
resources and partners, thanks for your support and for providing us with so
much to offer for those aspiring to realize their dreams. As we continue to
commit to the excellence of our craft, there is no limit to what we can
accomplish.
I look forward to seeing you all here for our Spring issue posting
April 1, 2011.
Stay productive,
Johnny
